Coach Anthony Jones’ squad was blessed with depth in a season that the Panthers needed it. When junior guard Taryn Griffey, the Class 8A state player of the year in 2012, went down with an ACL injury in the preseason, others stepped up, especially 5-7 senior Sydnei McCaskill (Georgia signee). Senior center Arianna Cumbie (knee) and George Washington-bound senior wing Hannah Schaible (ankle) also missed large chunks of time.
The Panthers made history in February, becoming the first Florida High School Athletic Association girls’ program to three-peat in the largest classification, beating Miami High, 52-47. Guard Sydnei McCaskill totaled 17 points and seven assists while junior Jade Cheek scored 12 points, sinking four 3-pointers. This is Dr. Phillips’ the third trip to the NHSI, winning it in 2011.
